Beto O’Rourke Can Suck It

The national conversation about gun control always ramps up a couple of notches around election time. We’re used to this. Republicans bleat on about how the Democrats are coming to take your guns. Democrats insist that they don’t really want to take your guns at all. Everyone gets angry, and there’s a lot of hemming and hawing on both sides as they jockey for the least offensive possible position that still panders to their base.

And then there’s this fucking guy.

For those of you who aren’t away, failing Democratic presidential candidate and child murder fantasy author Beto O’Rourke just fed into the wet dreams of every conspiracy theorist on the Right by saying that yes, they are coming to take our guns. Or, more specifically:

“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15s and AK-47s.”

Seriously, fuck this guy.

They even made it into a T-shirt.

Seriously, FUCK Beto O’Rourke.

Specifically, he proposed a mandatory buyback of AR-15s, AK-47s, and any other “assault weapon,” a broad and largely useless term that can cover anything from the above rifles to handguns with the capability to accept magazines over a certain size. Such a proposal, he believes, will magically fix the problem of mass shootings, as we’ll all just meekly hand over our weapons, rather than conveniently “losing” them in a boating accident the week before it goes into effect.

Leaving aside the fact that, under the Lautenberg Amendment, the sale of firearms to domestic abusers is illegal- actually, you know what? That was going to be a throwaway joke, but honestly, I wouldn’t sell a gun to someone who’s responsible for the murder of women and children by burning them to fucking death. Or who’s responsible for the wholesale genocide of an entire people.

Look, y’all, I love America. I love what we stand for and what we can be as a people. That does not equate, for one fraction of a second, to trusting our government. Men in power can and have done terrible things, and there is no possible timeline when I’d entrust them with any continued power without the Second Amendment looming over their shoulders, just in case they try to do it again.

That’s a whole ‘nother can of worms though. I’ll rant on that later.

Moving on.

This proposed “buyback” program, “buyback” being in quotations because I didn’t buy my guns from those fuckers in the first place, represents a huge shift in the discussion around gun control, and not for the better.

But that’s not the worst of it.

This motherfucker had to go and try to get the credit card companies involved.

In essence, a child murder fantasizer who is failing to run for president is trying to encourage private companies to deny sales of “assault weapons”, “assault weapons” being in quotations because we all fucking know the definition is going to change to suit whatever twisted fucking agenda the powers that be have at the time.

That’s right. If you can’t pass a law, just try to get private companies to do your dirty work for you. Because what we need right now is corporations sticking their noses even further into the day to day running of our country.

What a chode.

Sorry. Had to bash my head on the keyboard for a second to keep the stupid from setting in.

Look, I’ve tried to maintain a reasoned stance on gun control over the years. I’m all for letting the CDC take a crack at the problem of gun violence. I don’t object to universal background checks because, hell, we’ve pretty much already got them. Unless you bought a gun from a buddy off the books, there’s about a 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999% chance you went through one anyway.

Keep felons from owning guns, I don’t care. Don’t let folks convicted of domestic violence have them (I’m looking at you, Uncle Sam.) Hell, as long as you build some sort of due process into them, I don’t even mind red flag laws. Sorry y’all, but if you don’t make an ass out of yourself like this guy, you’re probably not going to have anything to worry about unless you’re actually fucked in the head.

The “buyback” was stupid, probably unconstitutional, and would be destined to fail anyway. And I’m sure he knows that. It’s a political stunt designed to bolster his flagging numbers.

But this? Getting corporations involved? This is low. It’s evil. If you’re not pissed about it, you should be.
