Hi, I’m the Constitution

Hi. I’m the Constitution.

Although large groups of people out there are suddenly just now realizing that I exist, I’ve actually been here for over two centuries—even through the last few presidents, as hard as that is to believe.

True story. I was here when President Obama championed legislation that punished people for not purchasing a product (which his people said relied on the “stupidity of the American voter”); when he far-overstepped his bounds regarding my Second Amendment; oversaw the FCC’s intrusion into the Internet; and used the EPA to regulate far beyond its authority. constitutionfront

I was here when George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act and vastly expanded domestic spying, thus trampling on my Fourth Amendment; and when he signed TARP 1, using taxpayer money to bailout failed business models—something anathema to the concept of “limited government.”

Yup, I was here for that along with numerous other legislative efforts that vastly expanded the size and scope of the federal government. And I would have been here if that other person a lot of you voted for took office, even though she wanted to bury me. So it begs the question…

Why did you forget me until now? It makes me feel sad and wonder about some things.

I wonder if—and I know this may sound crazy—you only remember me when your preferred candidate or political party is not in power.

I wonder if you only remember me when the “other” occupies your favorite political office.

I wonder if you only consider my purpose when it’s a member of another tribe, as it were, living in the White House.

Maybe it’s me and not you. Maybe I haven’t done a good job of telling you about my real feelings.

Maybe I’ve kept too much bottled up inside.

I want that to change between us. I want you to understand what I am and what I was made for.

I want you to understand that I wasn’t created for the purpose of giving politicians an excuse to do whatever they want and have a piece of paper to back it up.

I want you to know that my reason for being is not to be ignored just because a “nice guy” holds a certain position in government.

I want you to know that I wasn’t written to tell people what they could or couldn’t do.

I was written to tell the government what it could and couldn’t do.

I know that may sound weird to you today, but I’m being serious. That Bill of Rights? Yeah, those are all about limiting the power of the government, not the individual.

So when I said “Congress shall make no law,” I really meant it. That was for them to protect you. ConstitutionPurpose

I’m sorry that so much of this seems to have been lost. I hope that things can be different between us now, even if it is because you feel slighted by that guy who’s about to move into the White House.

Yeah, it makes me feel like a rebound relationship, but I’ll take what I can get right now. I’m desperate, what can I say.

Oh and one more tiny thing…

THE COMMERCE CLAUSE IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO DREAM UP ANY AND EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO DO.

Sorry I yelled, but you had that coming after the way you’ve treated me.

Sincerely,

The Constitution.

P.S. You can check me out in my sleek online format here. And if you want some pretty insightful, scholarly, and yet “politically incorrect” information about me, I’d recommend checking this out.
